According to researchers at Duke University and the Environmental Working Group, a common nail colour constituent found in many brands may be dangerous. for people who regularly paint their nails., reports Marie Claire.

The ingredient is Triphenyl phosphate or TPHP, and it’s made to make polishes more durable and flexible. TPHP, which is also used to make plastic and to stop foam furniture from catching fire, may have been introduced to nail polishes to replace phthalates which studies have linked to reproductive issues.

TPHP is an endocrine disruptor - which means, it can have a serious effect on hormonal activities. According to scientists, it may be linked to weight gain in human beings. Studies also suggest that transparent nail polishes usually contain more TPHP than coloured ones.

Chances are, many other cosmetic products may have this ingredient which can have severe effects on one's reproductive system.
