KARACHI:
An anti-terrorism court granted on Saturday bail to Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar in two cases pertaining to organising, listening to and appreciating a ‘hate speech’ of Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain. Akhtar faces a number of cases pertaining to the May 12, 2007 violence, Altaf’s incendiary speeches and facilitating suspected terrorists. He has been behind bars since July. The two cases, in which bail has been granted, were registered at the Brigade and Malir City police stations and revolve around a speech in which Altaf made controversial remarks about the army. The court heard arguments and decided that the applicant be released, if not jailed in other cases, against a surety of Rs100,000 per case.
