KARACHI:
Weightlifter Nooh Dastagir Butt won two medals for Pakistan at the Commonwealth Championships in Penang, Malaysia yesterday.

The 18-year-old athlete lifted 369kg in total — the same as New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti — but had to settle for silver medal as his Kiwi opponent was adjudged the winner on body weight advantage.

Butt added a second medal to his collection by winning bronze in the seniors’ event, where the much experienced Damon Joseph Kelly, of Australia, triumphed by lifting 373kg in comparison to Butt’s 369kg. Separating the two was Liti, who won silver.

Amjad grabs unlikely bronze at Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships

“It was a tough competition for Butt and he only just missed out on an attempt to lift 211kg. It was a nail-biting finish in both the events” the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWF) Vice-President Rashed Malik told The Express Tribune.

He further added, “When he comes back we will put him through a strict weight training program. He missed out on the gold just because he was weighing a kg more than Litti.”

Malik believes that pitting young athletes in seniors’ event is a good strategy as it will give them the exposure as well as a chance to rectify their mistakes.

He also commended other Pakistan weightlifters, including Talha Talib, who won gold in the 62kg category and Farhan Amjad, who claimed the 77kg category’s bronze.
