KARACHI:
Three suspected terrorists were killed while one policeman sustained injuries during an encounter in Korangi, claimed Counter-Terrorism Department officials (CTD) on Thursday.
During a press conference, CTD-II operational head SSP Junaid Sheikh claimed that the deceased were ‘hardcore’ militants and identified them as Saeedullah alias Haris, Abdul Ghani alias Ghania and Noorul Amin alias Abdullah - all belonging to the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
CTD-II, in collaboration with intelligence agencies, raided a suspected militant hideout in the Korangi Causeway vicinity, said SSP Sheikh, adding that an exchange of fire resulted in the casualties.
Describing the profiles of the alleged militants, the officer said that Saeedullah was a TTP operative and carried out reconnaissance of targets in Karachi for the Afghan Taliban and for his brother, a local TTP commander.
One of his brothers was killed in a drone strike, the SSP said, adding that Saeedullah was involved in the killing of Ahmadis and providing financial assistance to families of suicide bombers.
About Ghani, the SSP said that he belonged to AQIS and fought the army in Miranshah, North Waziristan during operation Zarb-e-Azb. Sheikh said that the militant was an expert in making improvised explosive devices (IEDs). He was also given Rs800,000 by a militant commander of the same group in Afghanistan to buy a boat to conduct terrorist activities at the sea, Sheikh added.
The last suspect, Amin, was also an AQIS militant and had been involved in the killing of soldiers during attacks in Waziristan’s Gomalzai and Machis areas, Sheikh claimed. He was also an expert in making IEDs and worked at such a factory in Miranshah, the SSP asserted, adding that he recruited suicide bombers for attacks and was recently tasked with the killing of security personnel in the port city.
Arms, ammunition and grenades were recovered from the suspected militants’ possession, the CTD claimed.
