ISLAMABAD:
The Argentine Movie Festival 2011 began with showcasing the super-hit movie Nueve Reinas (nine queens) at the Argentine embassy here on Thursday evening.

Ambassador Rodolfo Martin Saravia had organised the event for his Pakistani friends to come and enjoy a casual evening with a movie and snacks.

In contrast with other diplomatic gatherings, this one was closely-knit, with a selective audience and also a bit too laid-back for a diplomatic event. The dress code was casual; men donned blazers and jackets and women were mostly dressed in shalwar kamiz or jeans, wrapped in shawls.

The main hall of the embassy was converted into a make-shift cinema hall. The movie was played on a projector screen and chairs were arranged in rows and aisles, making room for guests to comfortably move around.

Once the ambassador was seated in the front row, the movie began.

The 114- minute Latin American movie was intriguing and held the audience captivated till the last minute.

Shot in Spanish and screened with English subtitles, the movie’s plot follows two con artists who try to swindle a stamp collector by selling a sheet of counterfeit stamps (the “nine queens”). ‘Marco’ is played by Ricardo Darin and Gaston Pauls as ‘Juan’.

The movie is arguably one of the best con-films of all time, with action, thrill and deception, tinged with humor and sarcasm in both the leading characters.

Written and Directed by Fabian Bielinsky, the fast moving movie is a super-hit in native- Argentina and often likened to the league of Stephen Frear’s “The Grifters” and David Mamet’s “House of games”.

The film was nominated for 28 awards won 21 of them, including the Silver Condor, Premier Award and Sant Jordi Awards.

“There are other movies I want to play for my Pakistani friends, this is a good and fun way of getting together and learning about each other’s cultures” Saravia told The Express Tribune.

The embassy butler served drinks through the screening and snacks, during the interval.

The light menu fell in sync with the casual theme; mini pizzas, meatballs and other one-bite delicacies, prepared by the embassy chef.

The movie was followed by cocktail, where guests exchanged their views, enjoying/high on the relaxed evening.
