‘Space science can help mitigate disaster’
The UAF VC said the earth satellites were being widely used to identify and forecast natural disasters

Space science has been playing an active role in fighting different challenges, including floods, diseases and droughts. With such technological advancement, it becomes easier to perceive the trends of the nature in advance. The technology has brought revolution in modern day world.
These views were expressed by University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan on Thursday. He was speaking during the inaugural session of World Space Week.
Different programmes, including water rocket competition, an awareness walk, and a central function was held at Iqbal Auditorium in which students from 40 schools participated. The session was organised by UAF and Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission.
The UAF VC said the earth satellites were being widely used to identify and forecast natural disasters. He said, “We can identify rainfall and other trends and their impact on humans as well as on agriculture.” He added, “We can also take precautionary measures in case of emergencies and disasters.”
The vice-chancellor said the UN General Assembly declared the first space week in 1999 and it was being observed with a different theme every year. He said the space week offered an exciting opportunity for students to explore new avenues for their future.
SUPARCO Agri Information Centre Director Dr Ijaz Ahmad said the technology brought benefits to the modern world. “The space technology has brought more benefit to mankind than any technological advancement in the world. In fact, no other technology and scientific breakthrough provided as much benefits to humans as space technology.”
Similarly, Research Director Dr Aslam Mirza said space science was playing a pivotal role in our lives. The world had become a global village due to this advancement.
