PCO judges: Intra-court appeals to be heard today
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to hear the appeals of LHC justices.
ISLAMABAD:
A seven-member larger bench is due to hear intra-court appeals of two Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) judges on Friday (today) against the Supreme Court’s ruling in the contempt of court case.
The bench was constituted on Thursday by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to hear the appeals of justices Shabbar Raza Rizvi and Hasnat Ahmed Khan of the Lahore High Court (LHC). Charges are to be framed against them on February 21.
The bench, headed by the chief justice, comprises Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Amir Hani Muslim.
Counsel Dr Abdul Basit filed the appeal in the Supreme Court on Monday under Section 19 of the Contempt of Court Ordinance of 2003. He requested the court to first release a detailed judgment and to review its verdict before framing charges against the judges.
Meanwhile, former PCO chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar and Justice Yasmin Abbasey also filed their intra-court appeals against the four-member bench’s short order for framing charges against PCO judges contesting contempt of court cases.
Dogar’s counsel Ibrahim Satti and Abbasey’s counsel Syed Ali Zafar filed the appeals requesting the court to review its decision. They also pleaded that proceedings in the contempt of court cases be halted until the larger bench decides the intra-court appeals.
