Pakistan, India women’s series stalled amid political tensions
Failure to hold the event could hurt both countries’ World Cup chances

The series between Pakistan and India’s women’s team, which is to be hosted by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is the recent casualty added to the list of sporting events which have been hurt by political tensions between the two nations.
The bilateral event, which counts towards International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Women’s Championship points, is now in major doubt since Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has failed to make an official decision on the matter.
“This is for the government to decide,” said a BCCI official regarding the series. “The BCCI doesn’t have a say in this. We still have time to make a decision.”
Presently, the PCB is open to hosting the three-match ODI series in the United Arab Emirates. However, the board wants India to forfeit the six points available for the series if they do not agree to play.

India currently sit sixth on the table in the ICC Women’s Championship, with Pakistan on seventh with eight points. If the six points for the series are awarded to Pakistan, neither side will have a chance to directly qualify for the World Cup.
According to an ICC spokesperson, if the series is not played, then that the matter of how the points will be awarded will be referred to the event’s technical committee.
“The two sides have until the end of this month to play the series, which has to be hosted by Pakistan,” said the spokesperson. “If the series doesn’t go ahead, then the matter will be referred to the Event Technical Committee.”
BCCI chief rules out cricket series with Pakistan
Cricketing ties between the two countries are currently stalled, given the political tensions between the neighbours. The men’s teams have not played a bilateral series against each other since 2013, when Pakistan visited India for a limited overs series.
Nevertheless, both the women’s teams are also scheduled to play the Asia Cup in Thailand between November 25 and December 5.
