Against the tide: Traders take to the streets over robberies

Fish traders, and a hundred other sympathisers protest against police’s inability to curb robberies.

SUKKUR:
Fish traders, and a hundred other sympathisers, took to the streets on Thursday to protest the police’s inability to curb robberies.

The protesters have given the police a two-day ultimatum to recover the looted cash and motorcycles otherwise they will go on token hunger strikes from February 19. If the police remain ineffective, the traders warned they will resort to shutter-down strikes and a protest movement.

Hundreds of traders, residents, political and social activists organised a rally and staged a sit-in outside the Sukkur Press Club. They also suspended traffic for over two hours. They were condemning the Rs2.7 million theft at the shop of a wholesale dealer, Lala Abdul Rasul, eight days ago. Over 35 motorcycles have also been stolen from residents in the past week and the police have yet to recover any vehicle, claimed the protesters.

Members of Sukkur Small Traders, Sukkur Motor Work-shop Association, Wholesale Fish Dealers Association, Shehri Ittehad, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam attended the rally.
