Citizens’ safety: 10,000 policemen deployed for Muharram security in Sukkur

Sukkur, Khairpur districts declared ‘sensitive’ by police, strict measures being taken

SUKKUR: The police have declared 37 mourning processions and 101 majalis as ‘most sensitive’, while 303 mourning processions and 671 majalis have been declared ‘sensitive’ in Sukkur region.

According to the Sukkur DIG’s media liaison officer, 755 large and small processions will be carried out till Muharram 12 in the Sukkur region, along with 3,304 majalis. Around 10,029 policemen will be deployed for security during this period. Besides this, Rangers personnel will also be deployed and army contingents will be available as backup, he said.



According to the breakup, 145 processions and 1,288 majalis will be held in Sukkur district, 83 processions and 596 majalis in Ghotki and 547 processions and 1,620 majalis will be held in Khairpur district. According to Sukkur DIG Feroze Shah, the Sindh government has declared Sukkur and Khairpur as sensitive areas, therefore special security measures have been adopted in both the districts to avoid any untoward incidents.

The DIG added that for this purpose, 3,190 policemen have been deployed in Sukkur, 2,468 in Ghotki and 4,371 in Khairpur district. A central monitoring cell has been established at the DIG office for keeping a vigilant eye on people’s movement. The DIG has appealed to the general public, especially religious clerics, to maintain peace and brotherhood during Muharram.
