KARACHI:
Pakistan wrestlers Muhammad Inam and Muhammad Nazir returned home from the 2016 Asian Beach Games with a gold and silver medal on Tuesday night and started training almost immediately for the Commonwealth Championships next month.
Inam defeated Iran’s Seyyed Mohammad Sadatitilehboni 3-0 in the final of the 90kg event and Nazir lost his final 3-0 to another Iranian wrestler Muhammad Naderi in the 70kg competition.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Asad Butt lost his bout for the bronze medal to Mongolia’s Ankhbayar Batchuluun 3-2 and finished fourth in the Games that concluded on October 2.
“When we’re competing for Pakistan, it’s a do-or-die situation,” Inam told The Express Tribune right after his training. “I’m happy with my performance as I didn’t lose a single point in any of my five bouts in the competition. I’m looking for a gold medal in Commonwealth Championship which we haven’t won in decades.”
Pakistan Wrestling Federation Secretary Muhammad Arshad Sattar said it was a great result for Pakistan.
“We’re very proud of them for outplaying Iran, who are the top country in Asia along with Korea and Japan,” Sattar told The Express Tribune. “We want to repeat that success in the Commonwealth Championships too.”
Pakistan’s total medal tally at the Asian Beach Games now stands at two gold medals — one in wrestling and the other in kabaddi, and three silvers and six bronze medals in jiu-jitsu.
