Graft charges: NAB arrests Sindh’s former local govt secretary (National)
Ali Ahmed was sacked from the position in Nov 2013 following a controversy over the appointments of 12,900 employees
ISLAMABAD:
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday arrested Sindh’s former local government secretary Ali Ahmed Lund from the Supreme Court after his bail plea was dismissed.
The three-judge bench, headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, heard Ahmed’s bail application against the Sindh High Court’s decision. The high court had dismissed an earlier filed bail application in May 2016.
The former secretary is accused of illegally accumulating moveable and immoveable assets estimated to be around Rs225 million. According to NAB, Ahmed made money which is incompatible with his known legitimate sources of income during his employment as a government servant from 1984 to 2014.
He was sacked from the position in November 2013 following a controversy over the appointments of 12,900 employees in the department he was managing. He had ordered the removal of these employees, saying that their induction since June 2012 was against the rules. However, the Sindh government nullified his action and reinstated the employees. NAB launched an inquiry against the former secretary in 2014 which was later turned into a reference in December 2015.
