KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly is likely to adopt joint resolutions against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain for his 'anti-Pakistan' remarks, when it meets today (Wednesday).

The session, which will be presided over by speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, is being held after a gap of three months.

Sindh Assembly secretary GM Umer Farooq informed The Express Tribune that three separate resolutions have been submitted by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League - Functional (PML-F) lawmakers against the MQM founder. "It is the speaker's prerogative to take up the resolutions or not," he said.

According to the assembly secretariat, Khurrum Sher Zaman of PTI, Khairunisa Mughal of PPP and Nand Kumar of PML-F have separately moved the resolutions. According to a senior official in the Sindh Assembly, all the resolutions demand the federal government to lodge high treason cases under against Altaf and his accomplices for his anti-Pakistan remarks and the attack on a TV channel's office by his supporters.

After submitting his resolution, PTI MPA Zaman said that the MQM founder not only passed anti-Pakistan remarks on August 22, but also used derogatory language against the armed forces. "He has vocally been asking India and United Nations for their intervention in Pakistan," he said. "I request the speaker to take up this resolution tomorrow so that exemplary punishment can be given to him."

It will be the first session after MQM-Pakistan, led by Dr Farooq Sattar, parted ways with MQM-London and disowned Altaf's leadership. "Let us see the reaction of MQM MPAs who used to offer 30-minute prayers for the health of their leader in the beginning of the session," said a lawmaker requesting anonymity.

Meanwhile, there are privilege and adjournment motions and question-and-answer session of the health department and introduction of bills on the agenda as well.
