Imran Khan invites workers from across the country to join the rally against 'Sharif family's corruption'

Despite 'divisions' within the party over the forthcoming rally, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to go ahead with its 'anti-corruption' march towards Raiwind - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's private residence - on September 30.

“I invite all my party workers from across the country to reach Raiwind on September 30,” PTI chairman Imran Khan told his party workers while addressing a convention in Islamabad on Sunday.

The date for the rally was changed from September 24 following the disapproval to join the protest by opposition parties, including Tahirul Qadri's Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), among others.

The development was followed by a clarification from PTI leaders that the proposed site of the campaign was a fair distance away from the PM’s private residence, and that the rally will be peaceful.



The cricketer-turned-politician claimed there were only two choices left for the nation. “One is to wait for the next general elections in 2018, forget about the corruption allegations leveled in Panama Papers and let our institutions be destroyed [by the rulers],” he said, adding the other choice was to create a new Pakistan. “One choice is of destruction while the other is to create a new Pakistan”.

In April this year, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) published a fraction of the data leaked under the Panama Papers investigation, naming about 640 Pakistanis as beneficiaries of offshore holdings.

'PTI protest miles away from Sharifs’ estate'

The PTI leader also reiterated his accusations of rigging in 2013 general elections. “Nawaz won 2013 elections with the help of election commission and he [Nawaz] knows that if he loses the next elections he will go to jail which is why a huge amount of money will be spent to rig 2018 elections,” Imran said.
