Former Major League Baseball star Keith Hernandez announced the passing of his beloved cat, Hadji, on Wednesday.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Hernandez shared, “It’s with a heavy heart that I must tell you that I had to put Hadji down last week. It was his time to go. I loved him so much and miss him dearly. He was a great companion for 22 yrs. RIP my little guy.”

Hadji, a Bengal cat, had been with Hernandez for over two decades, becoming known for his spirited personality and adventurous nature.
In a 2021 interview with GQ, Hernandez described Hadji as “a Bengal, which is a breed that is four generations removed from the Asian Tree Leopard… He’s been with me 18 years, for crying out loud, he’s an old friend.” To accommodate Hadji’s love for the outdoors, Hernandez customized his home with a backyard enclosure and a custom-built catwalk.
Hernandez, 71, holds a celebrated legacy in baseball, having played as a first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets. He earned five All-Star selections and won two World Series titles, later transitioning to broadcasting as a Mets color commentator in 1998 and appearing as a guest star on ‘Seinfeld.’
Sharing his final reflections on Hadji, Hernandez said, “It was his time to go… He passed painlessly and with dignity. Tough one. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it.”
