Post-Eid detox Meat of the matter

Here are a few tried and tested tips guaranteed to give your digestive system a well-deserved break

Eid celebrations might have ended but it is not surprising if you woke up today feeling all lethargic and nauseated. Sure all those mutton chops, the beef boti and nihari were finger-licking good, but running riot over the dinner table comes with intensive detox requirements, for you to be able to feel rejuvenated. If you’re absolutely sure that the barbecues and dinner parties are over, it’s time for you to kick off a healthy body cleansing regime. Compiled from prevention.com, here are a few tried and tested tips guaranteed to give your digestive system a well-deserved break:

1- Light breakfast: Your mother may scowl, but for a few days at least, you will have to steer clear of her desi ghee parathas. Switch to a hearty bowl of yogurt mixed with your favourite seasonal fruit or berries. Yogurt contains beneficial bacteria known as lactobacilli that act against gut inflammation and keep bowel movements regular. Fruits, on the other hand, are high in energy and natural sugars to keep you going all day.

2- Your cup of tea: Go easy on the thick doodh patti that you usually indulge in, and instead opt for a healthy, steaming cup of green, ginger or peppermint tea. Ginger tea is a natural anti-spasmodic, and perhaps the best solution for any indigestion that you may be experiencing – just squeeze a bit of lemon in it to enhance the flavour and sip the goodness!

3- Junk replacement: Kill the temptation to buy a couple of samosas as evening snacks and whip up a bowl of oatmeal with cinnamon as a healthy replacement. Topped off with sliced pear, peach or even yogurt, oatmeal is super gentle on the stomach and makes for the perfect meal.

4- Go bananas: Following some seriously heavy binge eating, your system requires potassium to balance the effects of bloating and indigestion. Bananas are rich, easy, pocket-friendly sources of the nutrient, which also helps in regulating elevated blood pressure levels. You can either start your day with the fruit, or have it as a snack on the go but make sure you’re eating plenty of bananas for efficient detoxification.

5- Like a fish: This may seem like a no-brainer, but the most important thing that you need to focus on is your water intake. Water has the power to replenish, restore, renew and rehydrate better than anything else in the world. It rids the system of harmful toxins contributing to optimal kidney functionality. Hydration is the key following several days of overconsumption, so keep a water bottle handy at all times. You can also add sliced lemon or sprigs of mint to make it more refreshing.
