RAWALPINDI:
A Rawalpindi police sub-inspector has been suspended for the alleged illegal detention and torture of a man suspected of being a thief.
Senior Superintendent of Police Operations Irfan Tariq has suspended Sub-inspector Raja Ilyas for detaining and torturing Zafar Khan in a “private torture cell” near Pirwadhai, after accusing him of stealing and selling a rickshaw, police sources said.
Sources said the SSP has also tasked a deputy superintendent of police to probe the allegations and submit a report at the soonest.
Earlier, Zafar Khan, a resident of Shah Jevan Colony on Girja Road, lodged a complaint with the SSP stating that five persons including SI Ilyas and constables Mazhar and Amir picked him up from an oil agency on September 4 and took him to the private torture cell in Pirwadhai, where they beat him.
The complainant said that the policemen accused him of stealing and selling the rickshaw despite the fact he showed them authentic ownership transfer documents.
The complaint further alleged that the policemen called his cousin, Akbar Khan, and took a Rs45,000 bribe for his release. He said that the policemen also took Rs23,000 from him after they detained him.
Complainant had also requested the SSP to take action against Sattar Khan, an alleged tout, and return the money taken from him and his cousin.
