KARACHI:
Police foiled on Saturday an attempted bank robbery in North Karachi and arrested one of the robbers after an exchange of fire.

At least two armed men entered a branch of United Bank Limited and held the staff and customers hostage at gunpoint, looting nearly Rs216,000 from the cash counter. The robbers attempted to escape, however, police personnel on routine patrolling reached the site and tried to intercept them with an exchange of fire between the two parties.

The police arrested one of the robbers, identified as Mohsin Shaikh, while his companion managed to escape. Shaikh, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, in his initial statement defended himself and said he never committed any criminal activity. The accused told the police that he is a student of matriculation and had no money to buy a sacrificial animal for Eid and therefore took part in the robbery.

The looted cash was recovered from Shaikh’s possession while a search for his companion, Shahzad, is under way, informed SHO Murtaza Majeed.

Meanwhile, Sindh Inspector General Allah Dino Khawaja appreciated the police team for foiling the bank robbery and recovering the looted cash.

He announced Rs100,000 cash as reward money for the intercepting police party.

A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.
