ISLAMABAD:
Five Polyclinic doctors and a CADD section officer will spend Eid behind bars as a hearing into their bail pleas was adjourned till September 16.

Special court judge Iram Niazi adjourned the hearing after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) failed to produce case records in court.

On September 1, the FIA had arrested five doctors of the hospital and a Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) section officer for allegedly embezzling millions of rupees during procurement of medical supplies for the hospital in the financial year 2013-14.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan had taken suo motu notice of the alleged irregularities in the procurement of gas kits and allied services for the hospital. On August 19, SC Justice Saqib Nisar directed the FIA to investigate and submit a report.

The agency launched an inquiry and found out irregularities in the procurement process. The FIA said that procurement rules were violated on four counts during the bidding process, causing a loss of Rs30 million to the exchequer.

The arrested officials include Polyclinic Deputy Executive Director Dr Iftikhar Naru, Dr Zulkifal Sabir, Dr Azmat Humayun Sumbal, Dr Farrukh Iqbal, and Fayyaz A Shaikh. Dr Zahid Hussain has also been nominated in the FIR lodged at the FIA’s Anti-Corruption Circle Islamabad, but he has not been arrested yet. Farhan Sikandar, a CADD section officer, has also been arrested.

Two suppliers, Malik Rehmat Manzoor and Rana Mehmood Ahmad, who were awarded the contracts to provide gas kits to the hospital for the year 2013-14 have also been arrested.

The suspects, who were given into FIA custody on physical remand, have filed bail pleas.
