KARACHI:
After a gap of nine years, the Landhi Kidney Centre has been made functional with doctors performing two successful surgeries at the facility on Monday morning.

The centre, which caters to industrial workers and their families and the only one under the Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI), only remained functional for two years after it was handed over to the province by the federal government in 2005.

On the directives of the chief minister's adviser on labour affairs, Senator Saeed Ghani, the facility was opened to cater to the needs of thousands of industrial workers and their families after its closure in 2007.

Ghani congratulated the doctors and paramedical staff for not only carrying out successful surgeries but also making the centre operational again.

He said efforts are being made to bring reforms in the labour department with a special focus to improve the performance of medical and education facilities for workers and their families.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Ghani said after assuming charge of the department, he was shocked to know that a state-of-the-art hospital was not in a working condition. "Maybe the previous ministers never took interest in making the hospital functional as it serves the working class people," he said.

Out of the 20 dialysis machines, 16 were out of order but now we have made sure that 10 are in working condition, he informed.

Landhi Kidney Centre Medical Superintendent Shah Muhammad Noonari said that due to Ghani's interest and support, the centre has been revived where two to three operations would be performed daily along with over twenty patients being provided dialysis facilities every day.
