ISLAMABAD: National Security Adviser Lt-Gen (retd) Nasser Khan Janjua has constituted a special committee to ensure progress on the prosecution of all terrorism-related cases, as well as the execution of convicted terrorists.

The committee, to be chaired by Attorney-General for Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf Ali, will present its proposals within 60 days for the improvement of the criminal justice system in the country

The committee will thoroughly consider the impediments in implementation and execution of the National Action Plan (NAP) and suggest proposals for presenting before the implementation committee for removing bottlenecks, the notification stated.

The AGP has summoned the first meeting of the committee on Monday (tomorrow) in Lahore to review the progress of cases registered under the various anti-terrorism laws.

The PM had formed an implementation committee under Janjua last month to enforce the anti-terrorism strategy. Before that, the centre had formed a task force to improve coordination between the federal and provincial law-enforcement agencies.

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has established a think-tank of 1,400 lawyers to float recommendations in an effort to overhaul the criminal justice system.

The bar body will publish a ‘Green Book’ in which recommendations would be given to incorporate changes in 22 areas of the criminal justice system. Suggestions received will be scrutinised by a 25-member advisory committee of top jurists of the country in September.

SCBA president Ali Zafar claims that AG Ashtar Ausaf has assured his full cooperation to the bar.
