Wasim Akram discusses his biggest regret

Former Pakistan fast-bowler also talks about his experiences at the ‘home of cricket’

Former Pakistan fast-bowler Wasim Akram revealed that his biggest regret was not being able to get his name on Lord’s honours board.

In an interview with Lord’s Cricket Ground, the former left-arm pacer said that he lamented not being able to claim a five-wicket haul at the famous ‘home of cricket’.

“The only regret that I have as a bowler is that even though I have 25 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, not one came at Lord’s,” he said. “So my name is not on the honours board.”



The legendary bowler played four Tests against England at Lord’s, winning two and losing one, with one match drawn.

Talking about his experiences at the ‘home of cricket’, the 50-year-old said each match had a special place in his memory, with the exception of 2001 Test, where Pakistan lost to England by an innings and nine runs.

1987

Speaking about his first game at Lord’s, Wasim said that there are no words to describe it other than calling it ‘a dream come true’.

“My first game at Lord’s was in 1987 – a long time ago,” he said. “But I remember my excitement level because I was playing at Lord’s and that too from Pakistan. It was dream come true for me.”



1992

However, the veteran termed the 1992 match as a ‘historic’ one, since Pakistan were able to win against England. And much to Wasim’s delight, he managed to hit the winning runs.

“That was a historic Test match because we needed 138 or something to win, and Waqar and I steered the ship,” he said. “I got 257 as well in Test cricket, but that definitely was one of my best moments with the bat. It was all the more special because I got to score the winning runs.”

1996

And the former pacer’s second victory at Lord’s came in 1996, when he served as the captain of Pakistan’s Test team against England.

“Winning against England is a massive deal but winning at Lord’s against England is even a bigger deal,” he said. “And as a captain, it was a big achievement.”



2001

But Wasim’s farewell Test match at Lord’s saw his side at the beaten end of a crushing defeat, and the veteran claimed he does not remember that encounter.

“I don’t remember that Test match at all because England won,” he said jokingly. “But in the end we drew the series.”

In all, the left-arm legend claimed 12 wickets from his four matches at the ‘home of cricket’, with the best figures of 66 for four.
