Govt to build 30 new hospitals under a mega health scheme
ISLAMABAD:
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday vowed to continue to extend moral, diplomatic and political support to the people of Occupied Kashmir.
“We have provided and will continue to provide diplomatic, political and moral support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the realisation of their fundamental right to self-determination in accordance with the UNSC resolutions,” an official statement quoted the prime minister as saying during his meeting with AJK President Masood Khan.
Sharif congratulated Khan on being elected as the president of AJK and expressed the hope that he would utilise his vast experience for the wellbeing of the people of AJK.
The prime minister said the federal government would extend its maximum support to the government in its endeavours to serve the people of AJK. “We strongly believe in serving the people and will extend our developmental agenda to AJK as well,” the prime minister said.
Meanwhile, as part of another mega projects’ initiative, this time in the fractured public health sector, the government has announced 30 new state-of-the-art hospitals to be constructed across the country at a cost of Rs110 billion.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday accorded approval for this mega scheme ‘in principle’. According to the Prime Minister’s media office, the majority of these hospitals will be completed within next 18 months. The PM’s media cell claimed that the Prime Minister Office and the Ministry of Finance will allocate funds for the construction of these hospitals.
According to the cell, the prime minister was given a comprehensive briefing over the Prime Minister’s Initiative to Improve Healthcare Infrastructure across the country. He was briefed over the existing healthcare infrastructure in the country in the context of population: hospital-to-bed ratio and the availability of in-patient care facility. The meeting briefed that the ratio of beds/1,000 people in Pakistan was 0:5 in 1970, 0:7 in 2005, 0:61 in 2015 while 0:62 in 2016.
“The prime minister approved the construction of three hospitals in Islamabad with a capacity of 600 beds each, ten 500 bed hospitals and twenty 250 bedded hospitals across the country,” his media office said.
Besides, the prime minister also approved the proposed sites for two more hospitals in the federal capital. In addition, the prime minister directed that four to five 100 bed hospitals should be completed in AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, the official statement added.
