Najam Ahmad Shah, secretary for Specialised Healthcare & Medical Education (SH&ME), said on Wednesday that steps were being taken to restructure the nursing sector.
Presiding over a meeting at the Civil Secretariat to review measures to restructure the nursing sector, Shah said the Directorate General of Nursing would be strengthened. He said it would be ensured that nurses had an atmosphere conducive to work at their workplace. He said that nurses would get opportunities to build their capacity and get higher education. He said that number of nurses at public hospitals would be increased and the Punjab Nursing Council would be set up soon. He said the Directorate General of Nursing would be empowered to take all decisions independently.
SH&ME Secretary Najam Ahmad Shah said the government had decided to strengthen and upgrade the nursing services in the province. He said the standard of nursing education would be improved keeping in view the international standards. For this purpose, he said, the nursing syllabus would be upgraded and nurses would be encouraged to enrol in BSc Nursing, MSc, MPhil and PhD programmes.
The secretary said that nursing services could be improved by empowering nurses. He said that international experts’ help would be sought to improve nursing services in Punjab. He directed the officials to prepare a whitepaper and a roadmap showing short-term and long-term strategies for the nursing sector upgrade within a week. He said the government would provide financial resources for the nursing sector upgrade.
SH&ME consultant Prof Syed Muhammad Awais briefed the meeting about the proposals and steps being taken for improvement in the nursing sector.
TRF and DFID consultant Dr Ehsanullah Tareen, Additional Secretary for Health Asad Naeem, Nursing Director General Nusrat Saeeda, Dr Fauzia Waqar and Syeda Maryam Khalid also attended the meeting.
