LAHORE:
Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday reserved its verdict on maintainability of a petition seeking directions for the federal government to take up the Kashmir issue at the UN Security Council.

LHC Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah heard the petition filed by Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed. Through his counsel AK Dogar, Saeed said that India was committing atrocities in Kashmir and violating UN resolutions. He said that India had been killing innocent Kashmiris and denying them the right to self-determination for years. For more than one month now, he said, Indian forces had been violating human rights and subjecting Kashmiris to torture.

The petitioner said that peace was at stake in the entire region. A nuclear war could not be ruled out if India continued to oppress Kashmiris. He prayed to the court to direct the federal government to take up the Kashmir issue at the UN Security Council, make India abide by the UNSC resolution passed in April 1948 and highlight the issue at the international level.

After hearing arguments of the petitioner’s counsel, the chief justice reserved his verdict on maintainability of the petition.
