SUKKUR: Tahira Jaffery, who along with her husband was poisoned by her family over their free will marriage, has survived the attack. However, her spouse, Kamran Larik, passed away on August 18.

Jaffery and Larik, both residents of Hingorja in Khairpur district, eloped from their houses on and tied the knot on August 8 in a Shaheed Benazirabad court. Later, the couple moved to Jamshoro and started living with Larik's friend.

Jaffery then contacted her parents and they asked her to come back, claiming that they want to get the couple married in a respectable manner. The couple trusted the parents and went back to Hingorja on August 18, where they were forced to drink poison from a bottle at gunpoint.

Someone from the area informed the police about the incident and they reached the scene. The couple was taken to Civil Hospital, Khairpur, where they remained under treatment for three days. Later, they were shifted to Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Larkana, where Larik passed away on August 18. His body was handed over to his relatives after postmortem, while Jaffery was not informed about the death.

Jaffery was supposed to be discharged on Saturday but Khairpur SSP requested the administration to discharge her on Monday, informed CMCH medicine Prof Dr Hakim Abro. A team of police will accompany her back to Khairpur, he said.

The police had arrested five suspects, including the woman's father, Ahsan, her uncles, Tehseen and Shamshad, Larik's father, Ghulam Rasool, and elder brother Imran for their involvement in the act.
