Pakistan Post has issued a commemorative postage stamp in memory of legendary philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi on occasion of Independence Day.
The postage stamp will be of Rs20 denomination and be available for sale from Sunday [today] at all important post offices of Pakistan, according to Radio Pakistan.
The head of Edhi Foundation breathed his list at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on July 8, 2016. Edhi had been suffering from kidney failure since 2013 and was on dialysis.
DHA renames road to honour Edhi
In view of the great contributions for the service of humanity, the federal government had announced one-day mourning while Sindh, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan governments also expressed their deep sense of grief and announced three days of mourning.
Last month, Defence Housing Authority (DHA) announced to rename a road in Phase-VIII in honour of the social activist. Beach Avenue was renamed as Abdul Sattar Edhi Avenue in order to acknowledge the philanthropist’s services. The road stretches from Khayaban-e-Ittehad all the way to Do Darya – a five kilometre stretch.
The Edhi Foundation runs a vast fleet of ambulances, orphanages and medical clinics across the country. The foundation has also provided relief in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iran, Sri Lanka, Croatia, Indonesia and in the United States after Hurricane Katrina.
Edhi has been nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize, and appears on the list again this year — put there by Malala Yousafzai, Pakistan’s teenage Nobel laureate.
