KARACHI:
The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued on Friday notice to the special public prosecutor on bail applications filed by leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) and Pasban Pakistan in the case against Dr Asim Hussain's alleged treatment of terrorists at their behest.

Headed by Justice Abdul Rasool Memon, the two-judge bench directed the special public prosecutor Ayaz Ahmed Tunio to file comments by August 18.

The bench was hearing bail applications filed by MQM MPA Abdul Rauf Siddiqui, PSP president Anis Kaimkhani and Pasban Pakistan's general-secretary Usman Moazzam.

MQM's mayoral-nominee for Karachi, Wasim Akhtar, Siddiqui and Kaimkhani were arrested on July 19 after the anti-terrorism court (ATC) rejected their pre-arrest bail granted by the high court in the criminals' treatment and harbouring case.

Rangers had filed the case alleging that terrorists and gangsters of the Lyari gang-war were treated and sheltered at the private hospitals run by Dr Asim.

In their petitions, the applicants had denied the allegations leveled by the paramilitary force with regard to seeking favours from Dr Asim for treatment of wounded criminals.

They had argued that the trial court had erred in passing the order. Therefore, they had pleaded to the court to set aside the ATC order and grant them post-arrest bail.

On Friday, all the three bail applications were fixed for joint hearing.

The judges were informed that the notice was already issued to the prosecutor general (PG).

Advocate Iqbal Awan from the PG office informed the bench that the Sindh government had appointed Tunio as the special public prosecutor in the case against Dr Asim. Therefore, he pleaded the court to issue a notice to Tunio for comments.

Therefore, the bench issued a notice to Tunio for August 18 to file comments on the bail applications of the accused.
