Career counsel: Express Education Expo 2016 concludes
PHEC Chairman Nizamuddin visits expo on final day
LAHORE:
The Express Education Expo 2016 concluded on Wednesday at the Faletti’s Hotel after witnessing a huge turnout of students and the general public.
On the final day of the event, Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Chairman Dr Nizamuddin visited the stalls. Talking to reporters, he said that the efforts made by the Express Media Group to bring together all stakeholders - students, teachers, academics, professionals and career counsellors - under one roof were a huge achievement.
Dr Nizamuddin particularly emphasised the need for career counselling. “Students are unaware of the options available to them. It is one of the things that Pakistan desperately needs,” he said. He announced that the PHEC would establish career-counselling centres for students across the province to help them make career-oriented education decisions.
He said that Pakistan should invest in technology and integrate it in the education system. “Pakistan also needs to attract foreign students. There was a time when students from many countries chose to study at Pakistani universities. We need to invest in education once again and bring our universities to the level of international institutions,” he said.
The PHEC chairman said that such events should also be held in other cities, including Bahawalpur, Faisalabad and Gujranwala. He said that education experts should also go to other parts of the country and provide counselling services to the students.
More than 50 local and international institutions participated in the expo. The Oxford University Press, the Punjab Group of Colleges, the University of Lahore, the Information Technology University, the Bahauddin Zakariya University Lahore, the University of Management and Technology, the FAST National University, the Forman Christian College University, the Government College University, the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, the University of Education, the Kinnaird College, the University of Sheffield, Malaysia and Skyline University College had set up stalls at the expo.
Apart from counselling stalls, there were musical performances, a battle of bands, drama, singing, group dance and declamation contests.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Mahwish Ali, a student, said that it was good that such an event had been arranged. She said that she had come with her friends. “There are not many things happening that the youth can enjoy. I came to see the performances and competitions,” she said.
