532 new firefighters take oath to protect lives

Rescue officials say 48 cars will be purchased for 24 districts for their transport needs.

The passing out ceremony of 532 fire fighters trained for 24 districts of the Punjab was held at the Emergency Services Academy, Shama Chowk, Ferozepur Road on Monday. The fire fighters would start performing their duties in a month. Rescue officials said that 48 cars would be purchased for the 24 districts for their transport needs.

The ceremony started with the cadets taking an oath administered by Director General Dr Rizwan Nasser. The fire fighters took the oath that they would put their own lives at risk if needed to rescue emergency victims.

The fire fighters showed their professional skills during demonstrations of fire fighting, rescue and emergency management of mass casualty incidents like explosions and building collapse.

The fire fighters also performed a skit that belaboured the point that untrained people who jump to rescue others can at times add to the problems.


The chief guest, Home Secretary Shahid Khan, expressed his pleasure at the training and the professionalism of Rescue 1122. He said the rescuers were performing an excellent job for a noble cause. He added that Rescue 1122 would soon start its operations at the tehsil level in the Punjab.

The Guest of Honour, National Institute of Management director general, Dr Naeem Aslam said that Rescue 1122 is the only service that provides a sense of security to citizens because of its international standards. “I have travelled all over the world and have seen emergency services at many places. I feel that Rescue 1122 can be compared with the best service in the world.” Dr Naseer said that Rescue 1122 had rescued over 800,000 emergency victims and prevented the loss of over Rs40 billion in fire incidents. He was confident that the new cadets will maintain the internationally acknowledged standards of Rescue 1122 and gain respect from the citizens.

He also reiterated a commitment to capacity building of trainers on a regular basis to ensure the quality of the training. He said they would soon be running internationally certified programmes.

The districts where the new fire fighters would render their duties are: Attock, Bahawalnagar, Bhakkar, Chakwal, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Jhelum, Jhang, Kasur, Khanewal, Khushab, Layyah, Lodhran, Mandi Bahauddin, Mianwali, Muzaffargarh, Nankana Sahib, Narowal, Okara, Pakpattan, Rajanpur, Sheikhupura, Toba Tek Singh and Vehari.
