KARACHI: The recent rainfall in the catchment areas of Hub Dam has come as a relief to Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) officials.

Chief of bulk water supply Zafar Palijo said that it is a good sign, as the water level has increased by over five feet from the dead level in the last month.

Palijo said Hub Dam is one of the biggest dams in the country and its catchment areas comprise 250 kilometres till Khuzdar. Palijo expects that the water level might increase even further after water from natural canals will reach the dam from the hills. He said if the rainfall continues in this manner, then the dam will be able to supply water for five or six months.

Recently, the KWSB inaugurated the first phase of a Rs300-million project that will allow Hub Dam to supply 50 million gallons per day. Project director Azam Khan said that the project was initiated after Hub Dam reached the dead level and there was no rise for months. It was then decided to fetch water from the dead level, he explained.

Abdul Rashid, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre Karachi, told The Express Tribune that the monsoon season will result in rainfall in the catchment areas of Hub Dam till August 6. He said he expects more spells of rain after this, as the monsoon will continue till September 15.
