PPP won’t stage sit-in: Khosa

PPP ministers’ concerns to be resolved soon, governor hopes.

LAHORE:
Governor Sardar Latif Khosa on Monday assured Law Minister Rana Sanaullah that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will not stage a sit-in outside the Punjab Assembly to press their 19-point agenda, as Senior Minister Raja Riaz had threatened to do a day earlier.

Sources in the PPP told The Express Tribune that Riaz had not yet decided what his next move would be, as being forced to call off the sit-in after publicly promising one would put him in an embarrassing position.

On Sunday, Riaz told the media that the PPP ministers would stage a sit-in from noon to 1 pm at the assembly steps if the PML-Nawaz-led government did not respond positively to its ally’s 19-point agenda and implement it in one week.

He was not answering his phone on Monday evening.

Khosa, after his meeting with the law minister on Monday, told reporters that the PPP ministers’ sit-in would not come to pass. There were some reservations and misunderstandings between the two sides that would be cleared up soon, he said.

He said the PPP’s coalition with the PML-N in Punjab would continue. He said that though governors were not meant to get involved in controversies, when needed they could help the two sides reconcile.

During his meeting with Sanaullah, Khosa said that the PPP wanted to develop a congenial relationship with the Punjab government so public issues could be resolved by working together. He said that the concerns of some PPP ministers were being ignored, but there were now some meetings going on that would hopefully resolve all matters.

The law minister said that the government would consult the governor on every issue. He invited the governor to his daughter’s wedding. Khosa accepted the invitation.

The governor invited Sanaullah and lawyers from the Advocate General’s Branch to Governor’s House. The minister accepted.

Khosa added that all appointments to the Prosecution Department would be made according to a pre-agreed formula.
