LAHORE: In a rather startling move, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Wednesday submitted a first of its kind resolution in the Punjab Assembly calling for a ban on famous Japanese anime series Doraemon.

PTI legislator Malik Taimoor Masood urged Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) to impose a ban on Doraemon or limit its airtime as it contains explicit content which has a bad impact on children.

The legislator argued that 24-hour cartoon channels are adversely affecting the educational and physical growth of children.

The resolution, which will be discussed in the next assembly session,  claims the language used in cartoons run on channels is damaging societal norms.

Doraemon is a Japanese manga series and is dubbed in Hindi for viewers in Pakistan and India.

The anime series revolves around a robotic cat named Doraemon and a young boy Nobita. It is aired on various cartoon channels.

Here’s how people reacted to the news:

The move comes after Ashish Chaturvedi, the whistleblower of India’s biggest education scam, voiced concerns against two of the world’s most famous Japanese cartoon characters – Doraemon and Shin Chan.

Chatuvardi feels the adverse psychological impacts of the two Hindi and English dubbed ‘violent’ cartoons are grappling a whole generation of kids across India and the world, according to the Times of India.

Anti-Israel cartoon contest opens in Tehran

Chaturvedi is seeking a ban on the telecast of the two Japanese cartoons as he claims several medial reports highlight mental abuse and other serious adverse impact of these cartoons on kids.

Meanwhile, in 2014, Chinese newspapers cautioned their countrymen against Doraemon saying, Beware of this “blue fatty” — the Japanese are exporting their values through him.

According to The New York Times, three major newspapers in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, fired accusations against Doraemon for its “political overtones” and being a tool of Japan’s “cultural invasion.”

Japan’s former foreign minister, Masahiko Komura, appointed Doraemon an “anime ambassador” in 2008 in the hope that the character would deepen the world’s understanding of the country.

Thats good, But what about filthy Indian Religious Cartoons e.g. Chota Bheem, Krishna, Arjun etc airing all day long in “Islamic Republic of Pakistan“. Why not put a resolution against them? first. They are poisoning our children. And what about Hindi dubbed cartoons airing all day in Pakistan which is destroying our national language. Please put resolution against them too.

And for God sake start making good entertainment material for Kids. There is good children programs produced by Pakistani channels thats why children are forced to watch this filthy crap on TV.

Parents are also responsible for letting children watch this filth on TV, but they are also helpless because there is no good alternative available for entertainments. Children are being snatched from streets and parents are scared to let there children play outside.

Govt./Pemra must step in for the sake of our future generations and take action against such material.

According to the logic of PTI we should ban Cartoon Network and infact all Cartoon channels. Because “Tom and Jerry” as it is the most violent series of all time. Poor Jerry is beaten with everything possible and then Jerry do the same to Tom.
Anyway these are the priorities of PTI. If PTI will be wiped out from the next elections in Punjab, then it will not be a surprise for me.
The politics of banning, fear mongering, personal bashing and dharna will not work. But unfortunately PTI will never learn. Recommend

Banning will not solve anything. Children are much smarter than their parents, they will find out other means to spoil themselves. If there is anything which should be banned is PTI’s vulgar language, trolling, trash talk and abuses. Recommend

Commendable move. There is no constructive idea in this Cartoon. Only superficial, dreamy characters like a boy who doesn’t listen his parents, a boy who bullies his fellows and snatches their gadgets/toys etc which extremely lack entertainment and learning. Moreover, the Cartoon is dubbed in Hindi language while we teach our children to speak Urdu. Recommend

Noby’s experiences remind him that taking the easy way out of a tough situation never pays off, but it’s a lesson he quickly forgets in time for the next misadventure. Even though Noby’s not the most willing student, Doraemon’s attempted positive influence on him reminds kids of the value of working hard, having good manners, and making thoughtful decisions. Sometimes characters yell at each other or laugh at one another’s misfortunes.Recommend

Very good. My 4 year old had been watching this since last 2 months andI was shocked how much these things affect childrens behavior. From a kid who really enjoyed studying he started using the cartoon characters words and lost interest in his homework. I finally tuned the channel out one day when he said he doesn’t want to go to school anymore and was trying to go out of home to play out in street just like the character escapes home and roam on streets all day.

Actually, what Imran is asking for is very logical. What I am amused at is people reacting to it the wrong way. I have seen doreamon and it’s one of the worst cartoon for a child to watch. Nobita, the second lead character after Doreamon, is a kid who is lazy, lies, tries to find short cuts in life, has a girl friend or dreams of Suzuka as her girl friend and future wife. Now, you show this story line to a kid for six months and tell me, what do you expect his imagination to be?.

I have a family doctor whom I met this Saturday and you won’t believe it was Doreamon and the bad impression it was having on children he talked about.

Please ban Doreamon and hope India follows too.Recommend

Very Very Good step. A ban should be imposed on all such kind of cartoons and PEMRA should direct Pakistani media groups to start a cartoon channel based on our own Pakistani culture with a lively and good story background, at least a series of our own must be started and besides entertaining kids it should focus on character building as well. Rather than advocating this vulgar cartoon, People should welcome this good initiative.Recommend

I also dont like these cartoons and i dont let my children watch these and they are happy with it. You dont like it then dont let your children tune into this. Didn’t this political party find some other issue to be raised that is worth being discussed! Poverty, terrorism, corruption, standards of education and nation’s development. There are 100s of issues to be raised but why did they chose this silly one? Is doremon that much threatening an issue for the current generation to be raised?!?! However, things like poverty, corruption, terrorism, standards of education and nation’s development do really pose substantially bigger threat to the current generation. ###Gob bless Doremon and the kids ### ;-)Recommend
