National day celebrated : Pak-Swiss political dialogue to start soon, says envoy

ISLAMABAD: Swiss community felt the taste of home at an event organised by their embassy here on Monday, and pledged to work for upholding the ideals of democracy, federalism, and pluralistic culture.

The event was organised by the embassy of Switzerland to celebrate the 725th National Day at the Swiss ambassador’s residence, says a press release.

The national flags of Pakistan and Switzerland adorned the walls, as the national anthems of both the countries were played followed by the message from the Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann. Traditional Swiss Raclette, as well as savoury and sweet gastronomical delights, were offered to tantalise the taste buds of the guests.

The folk music from Switzerland made the colourful event lively and entertaining.

Swiss Ambassador Marc-Pierre George, while welcoming the guests stated, “The first of August is an opportunity to reaffirm the cohesion of our regions, languages and culture. Our Swiss compatriots lend their voice, face and values, coupled with hard work and modesty, to promote Swiss presence abroad.”

The ambassador assured his Swiss compatriots that the network of his country’s embassies and representations will support them and offer modern services online.

More and more Swiss nationals living abroad are taking part in federal votes, which is an important sign because voting means building the future together as responsible citizens, he said.

“Switzerland takes pride in its pluralist, democratic and federalist culture; it is a living expression of openness to the world at large,” George said.

“The contribution of the Swiss community abroad is enormous and reinforces Switzerland’s global presence,” the ambassador said.

He added that more than 760,000 Swiss citizens live outside the country’s borders, making up approximately 11 per cent of the total population.

The ambassador, while speaking about bilateral relations with Islamabad, said, “Pakistan and Switzerland enjoy exceptional relations.”

“The two countries are not only united by a series of bilateral agreements but also engage in regular political dialogues at the highest level,” he added.

“I am pleased to note that the next round of political dialogue will soon be held in Islamabad,” George said.

This year, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) will celebrate its 50 years of presence in Pakistan.

The anniversary is an important milestone for the SDC to reflect on the ongoing commitment of Switzerland to Pakistan and the people of this country in the areas of water governance, local state building and humanitarian assistance, highlighted in their new “Country Strategy 2017-2020”, the ambassador said.
