Turf war: Kidnap FIR file against Gorchani
‘Police cannot do so without the PA speaker’s approval’
MULTAN:
Rajanpur police on Friday registered an FIR against Provincial Assembly Deputy Speaker Sher Ali Gorchani and his father Pervez Iqbal Gorchani for allegedly kidnapping a transporter.
The FIR was registered under Sections 447 (trespass), 382 (theft) and 149 (unlawful assembly) on orders of the Multan bench of Lahore High Court. Jahanzeb Khan Dreshak had moved the petition in this regard.
Dreshak, in his petition, had said that he was allotted 10 shops in the General Bus Stand by the Rajanpur Tehsil Municipal Administration under an agreement.
He said Gorchani was elected MPA from Jampur. “The MPA and his father have been annoyed because I did not support them.”
“In 2008, after Gorchani was elected, they started demanding a share from my bus stand earnings,” he said.
Dreshak said the MPA had threatened him with dire consequences on his refusal to cooperate.
“On December 21, 2008, the Gorchanis accompanied by 30 accomplices reached the bus stand. They were also accompanied by some policemen. They occupied the shops and stole the merchandise,” he told the court.
He said they also moved a case against him.
Dreshak said he secured bail from a sessions court on December 22, 2008.
“On January 9, 2009, the next date of hearing, police took me into custody from my house,” he said.
He said he was recovered by a bailiff the same day and was produced before the court where the police stated that he was not wanted in any case.
He said when he was leaving the court, he was picked again and taken to Lalgarh police check-post.
He said he was tied to a tree and was beaten by the MPA and his father.
“They told me to give up the shops and the bus stand. Otherwise, they said, I would be killed in a fake police encounter. They also threatened to hand me over to a criminal gang.”
Talking to newsmen, Gorchani said Dreshak was a notorious extortionist.
“More than 18 cases have been registered against him before I became a member of the Provincial Assembly,” he said. “Several transporters of the area had sought my help.”
Gorchani said after police had arrested Dreshak in a case moved by a transporter, he had helped in his recovery.
He said the shops were allotted to Dreshak illegally. “He never signed the contract for the bus stand,” he said.
Gorchani said he was not aware when Dreshak had filed a petition seeking his arrest.
“I was told about it on July 25 by the DG Khan regional police officer,” he said.
“FIRs cannot be registered against parliamentarians without prior permission from the speaker of the Punjab Assembly.
Police apparently violated this rule when they registered the FIR against me,” he said.
He said the RPO and the DPO must be held accountable for the violation. He said he had sent a complaint against police to the chief minister.
Gorchani said his younger brother was in transport business and he had won the bus stand contract in an auction for Rs2.6 million.
“He also won a contract for the Jampur bus stand,” he said.
