SHABQADAR:
Internal rifts emerged in Qaumi Watan Party Charsadda when the party leadership shifted its funds from the municipal committee of Shabqadar tehsil, run by QWP tehsil nazim, to the municipal committee of Tangi tehsil.

An insider told The Express Tribune QWP — which has four provincial and national assembly seats from Charsadda, with two tehsil nazims in Tangi and Shabqadar — is going through a crucial phase.

Fissures within

On July 26, QWP tendered construction work of Rs20 million of Shabqadar tehsil to the municipal committee of Tangi, instead of giving it to the municipal committee of Shabqadar.

Similarly, development funds for repair work in Shabqadar were given to the government at the district level, instead of giving them to Shabqadar municipal committee, where QWP has its own nazim, Zafar Ali Khan.

Although Zafar Ali was reluctant to comment on the matter, an insider said cold war between QWP leader and Zafar Ali has been going on since the party lost the district council seat vacated by Zafar Ali, after winning the tehsil council seat. The berth had always been won by Zafar Ali. As a result, the defeat came as a setback to QWP.

Subsequently, said the insider, the party has sidelined Zafar Ali. In response the nazim has been compromising on the development of the tehsil. For instance, a few weeks ago, he locked Government Higher Secondary School Battagram in Shabqadar over the appointment and transfer of class iv employees.

Zafar Ali said the appointments were based on political affiliations.

The issues in the health department emerged after appointments were made in the four basic health units of Charsadda – two are in Shabqadar, while the same count is in Tangi tehsil. Zafar Ali said all the four medical technicians appointed were from Tangi, although the employees should have been appointed from the respective tehsils.

Rifts with allies

On the one hand, the insider said, QWP is facing opposition from PTI Charsadda MPA Muhammad Arif Ahmadzai and his group. After holding a press conference against QWP last week, Muhammad Arif met PTI Chairperson Imran Khan in Bani Gala, Islamabad, where she expressed her reservations over the political alliance of PTI with QWP in the provincial assembly.
