LAHORE:
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Lahore leaders and workers celebrated the 61st birthday of former president and PPP Parliamentarians Cochairman Asif Ali Zardari outside Data Darbar on Tuesday.

Special prayers were offered for long life of Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto. Faisal Mir, Abdul Qadir Shaheen and Dr Zarrar Yusaf offered a chaddar at the shrine.

Police initially tried to stop the workers. They relented when the workers protested.

A stage had been set up in front of huge portraits of Asif Ali Zardari, displaying slogans like Happy Birthday, Nelson Mandela of Pakistan; Happy Birthday, Saviour of Democracy; Happy Birthday, Soldier of Bhutto; Happy Birthday, Guardian of PPP; and Daikho Daikho Kon Aya-Sheron Ka Shikari Aya.

A large number of PPP workers came round and raised slogans like Worker say Yari...Zardari; Agli Bari-Phir Zardari; Mard-i-Hur-Zardari; Wazir-i-Azam-Bilawal; Kal Bhi Bhutto Zinda Tha Aj Bhi Bhutto Zinda Hay; and Charon Soobon ki Zangeer-Benazir Benazir.

The PPP workers distributed free food among people. After distribution of food, 30 pigeons were freed in the name of democracy in Pakistan by Ashraf Khan, Malik Allah Yar, Shahzad Shafi and Imran Dogar.

In his address to workers, former PPP Lahore information secretary Faisal Mir said that due to his unmatched sacrifices for the PPP and democracy, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto used to call Asif Ali Zardari ‘Pakistan’s Nelson Mandela’. “During imprisonment, Zardari was told by Nawaz Sharif and Pervez Musharraf that he could be a free man if he signed some documents against Benazir Bhutto. His tongue was also sliced in jail during Nawaz Sharif’s government. Had Zardari bowed in front of Sharifs or Musharraf, the PPP would have been history by now,” he said.

Mir said that after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, it was Zardari who bravely faced all conspiracies against the PPP. “It is clear that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will be the next prime minister of Pakistan,” he said.

Former People’s Labour Bureau in-charge Abdul Qadir Shaheen said that Zardari had been a democratically-elected president of Pakistan due to his political vision. “He completed his term in office and handed over the presidency to next democratically-elected leader,” he said.

Dr Zarrar Yusaf said that it was Asif Ali Zardari who had helped rid the country of General (r) Musharraf.
