LAHORE:
Leader of the Opposition in the Provincial Assembly Mehmoodur Rasheed submitted a draft resolution to the Assembly Secretariat on Monday demanding immediate closure of the Orange Line Metro Train project over the death of four people in an accident near a construction site.

A dumper truck had crushed a rickshaw and two motorcycles on GT Road on Sunday, killing four people and injuring four others. Based on preliminary investigation, Baghbanpura police had held that the dumper did not belong to the contractor working on the OLMT track. However, at a demonstration held after the accident, several residents of the area had complained about poor safety standards at the OLMT sites and urged the government to take notice of the accidents involving machinery and vehicles employed for the project.

The resolution submitted by Rasheed blamed the provincial government for Sunday’s accident. It sought immediate closure of the project and demanded an impartial investigation into the incident. It also sought payment of compensation to the families of the deceased. Speaking on the occasion, Rasheed said construction work for the project had already claimed three dozen lives. He also said last week two people had died from electric shock suffered because a live wire had fallen into stagnant water in the street outside their house. He said such incidents were proof of poor governance under the PML-N government.

Rasheed also submitted an adjournment motion about recent reports of kidnapping of children. The motion said that from January to June this year 652 children had been reported kidnapped or missing across the province. It said 312 of these complaints were from Lahore. It referred to an intelligence report saying that 62 children had gone missing from Rawalpindi, 27 from Faisalabad, 25 from Multan and 24 from Sargodha.

The issue was also sought to be highlighted by PML-Q’s Chaudhry Aamir Sultan. He submitted a resolution expressing serious concern over the growing number of cases of abduction of children.
