ISLAMABAD:
The Senate adopted on Wednesday a resolution to express solidarity with the democratic government of Turkey in the wake of an attempted coup.

The resolution, tabled by PTI Senator Azam Khan Swati, pays tribute to the people of Turkey for their courage to uphold democratic norms and defeating those who perpetrated the military coup, saving their country from anarchy and civil war.

“We stand by (the) brotherly country … and pray for those who lost their lives for a just cause of defending the future of the country,” the resolution noted.

Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani referred a call-attention notice on non-functioning of colleges of medical lab technology to the Senate’s standing committee on health. The notice was moved by MQM Senator Mian Muhammad Ateeq Sheikh.

Dismissing a motion on a special report of the committee on salaries and allowances of members of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the chairman observed that since the report recommended the National Assembly to expedite legislation on the issue, it was not for Senate to dictate the NA on how to conduct its business. The motion was moved by PML-N Senator Muhammad Mohsin Khan Leghari.

On behalf of the Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control chairman Rehman Malik, PML-N lawmaker Chauhdry Tanvir submitted reports on the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

On a point of public importance, the chairman recommend lawmakers to either drop the idea of quota for jobs in the federal government or to legislate under Article 27 of the Constitution. He observed that the issue had been raised several times over the past three years.

Citing media reports, MQM Senator Khushbakht Shujaat pointed out that at least 200 children had been kidnapped in Lahore over the past six months, 177 of whom had been recovered. She observed this was a matter of grave concern.

Minister for Law Zahid Hamid condemned laying of fence along the Line of Control (LoC) by India, insisting that it was detrimental to Pakistan’s national security. The 460-kilometer-long fence is 500 meters away from the LoC, Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan said in a written reply.

The interior minister maintained that at least 5,023 illicit weapons had been recovered from 1,2036 accused and 4,414 cases had been registered. These weapons, he said, had been deposited in Saddar Mallkhana. However, after the court’s decisions and expiry of the appeal period, these weapons had been deposited for auction, the minister added.

Minister of Defence Khawaja Asif submitted a written reply saying that because of non-materialisation of the F-16 deal with the US, PAF was trying to acquire the combat jets from Royal Jordanian Air Force. The PAF, he said, was also exploring ways to acquire F-16s from other European countries.
