Power shortages: 'No reports about closure of industries'

There was no information that non-availability of furnace oil had caused the closure of power plants.

ISLAMABAD:
Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf on Friday told the National Assembly that he has received no reports about closure of industries due to power shortage.

During the question hour, he said there was no information that non-availability of furnace oil had caused the closure of power plants. He added some other reasons could be responsible for the closure but furnace oil was available to all power plants.

Answering a question, he said “the supply of electricity to the textile industry is our first priority as textile exports have crossed significant levels.”

Ashraf told the house the supply of electricity to industries would continue on a priority basis, but did not give any deadline for bringing an end to power outages in the country.

He said provinces have the right to produce electricity and the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has completed work on a hydropower project.

He said the nuclear power plant was producing 300 megawatts of electricity and efforts were being made to boost its production to 600 megawatts.

He said the government has drawn up a master plan to control the shortage of electricity, adding several short and long-term projects would be constructed under the plan.
