KARACHI: Search continues as rescue teams struggle to locate the body of a three-year-old girl, Heera, who drowned in Gujjar Nullah on Thursday.

Heera's house, located on the bank of Gujjar Nullah at Samnabad, collapsed allegedly when the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) was removing silt and garbage from the storm-water drain in Gulberg, some 30 to 40 metres away from the site of the incident.

Missing six-year-old girl's body recovered

According to District Central deputy commissioner Captain (retd) Fariduddin Mustafa, Pakistan Navy divers have been called in to carry out the rescue work but he is unsure how much time it will take to recover the body. The body may have been swept away by the water, he said, assuring that rescue efforts will continue today. Meanwhile, KMC administrator Laeeq Ahmed issued a press statement saying that all drains in the city were a natural source of storm water drainage therefore they must be free of encroachments.

"Action will be taken if encroachers do not remove their [installations] voluntarily," he said, directing municipal services officers to focus on choking points in the drains and removing them as soon as possible. Areas where heavy machines cannot be deployed must be cleaned manually, said Ahmed.
