KARACHI:
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) protested outside Karachi Press Club on Monday to demand an investigation into the alleged extrajudicial killings of its workers.

Most recently, the MQM alleged that one of its workers, Riazul Haq, was killed while in the custody of law enforcement agencies. On Sunday, the party called a press conference on the same issue and Monday’s protest was a continuation of their demands.

Addressing the protest were senior leaders Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Kanwar Naveed Jamil. They said that the state and its institutions were targeting a certain section of the population. They called for an immediate end to this victimisation and to stop pushing MQM against the wall.

They also said that this victimised segment was being treated in a manner which was against the Constitution and law. The leaders mentioned that in three years, 61 MQM workers had been killed in an extrajudicial manner, while 130 are still missing.

They demanded that the missing workers be presented in court and the due of process of law be followed. Additionally, it was demanded that no state institution be allowed to go against the Constitution and the law must prevail under all circumstances. They claimed that the MQM has been constantly staging protests yet no heed is being paid to its demands.

The protesters also asked for immediate justice to be provided to Haq and his family members. Haq’s brother also spoke and asked when his brother’s killers would be convicted. He also appealed to all those in positions of power to make sincere efforts to apprehend those behind the ‘murder’.

The MQM leaders demanded that the courts take immediate notice of all pending petitions and that Haq’s murder inquiry be conducted since his petition had also been filed in court.
