A young man was shot dead on Sunday night as unidentified 'policemen in civvies' opened fire on a car, according to police.

Abrar, resident of Kemari neighbourhood of Karachi was reportedly shot dead by policemen in Sindhi Muslim Society following a scuffle with a mobile snatcher.

According to Sindh police spokesperson, Inspector General (IG) Sindh AD Khawaja has taken notice of the firing by alleged police personnel in civvies and subsequent death of a youth and directed deputy inspector general (DIG) West to take tangible, indiscriminate and transparent investigation measures, and submit a report in this regard.

According to police, Abrar had reached an agreement to sell his cellphone with a person identified as Dil Nawaz after placing an advertisement on a website. The two mutually decided upon a location in Saddar to complete the transaction.

However, when the time came Dil Nawaz took the cellphone in his possession and attempted to speed away in his car, which led to a chase with Abrar eventually managing to get inside Nawaz's car.

When a police mobile stationed at Sindhi Muslim noticed the scuffle they opened fire on the car, killing Abrar and injuring Nawaz, a police spokesperson added.

The police have yet to make an arrest in the case or file a case against the involved personnel. Abrar’s relatives said police had been pressurising them for hours to not conduct Abrar’s postmortem.

Grieving Abrar’s death, they said the youth had gone to the aforementioned society to sell his mobile but never returned.
