PESHAWAR:
All non-functional schools in Peshawar will be made functional before the summer vacations end.

This was said by city district nazim Muhammad Asim Khan while talking to The Express Tribune on Saturday.

As per data collected by the district education officers male and female, there are around 55 schools in the provincial metropolis that have been lying vacant. Most of these schools are in rural union councils, including Urmar, Mathra, Sherkera, Mattani and Badabher.

According to Asim, they have collected the data of schools that have been lying close in the district due to different reasons, including land disputes, lack of staff and occupation of security forces in some areas.

He added he will meet the male and female district education officers to come up with solutions to open these schools.

The district nazim added they have constituted committees on the union council level which will look into education matters and report to the relevant department regarding the unavailability of teachers and other staff and missing facilities.

To handle the issue of funding, Asim said they would allocate Rs1.5 million for education in each union council so that all the schools have the required facilities.

He said the allocation would be made in the budget for local government that would be announced in the coming week.

On the cards

However, DEO Ulfat Begum said 17 female schools were non-functional in Peshawar, but most of them have been opened with the help of the district administration.

She said the schools in rural areas occupied by the security forces have also been opened and provided with teachers and other facilities. Ulfat Begum added newly recruited teachers have been provided to schools which were closed in Urmar Bala, Urmar Payan, Urmar Miana and Mathra union councils.
