On festive grounds : Over 400 prisoners released

Inmates includes 10 Afghan nationals.

KARACHI:
The judicial magistrates of the city have released more than 400 prisoners held for minor offences in Central and Malir prisons before Eid.

Around 289 under-trial prisoners were released from the Malir prison on Tuesday after judicial magistrates visited them and they confessed to their crimes, tendering an apology, said a jail official.

Describing the offences, the jail officials informed that these prisoners were charged with theft, possession of small amount of drugs, and hurting others in a fight, among other offences.

Similarly, around 150 prisoners were released from Central prison on Monday in the same manner as the magistrates visited them and heard their cases, said a court official.


The magistrates were tasked by their respective district and sessions judges to hold special hearings in prisons and release those who were in prison for minor offences and had spent a considerable time behind bars, the official explained.

Meanwhile, District West magistrate, Salman Amjad Siddiqui, performing a special duty, released 10 Afghan nationals after they were able to produce documents legitimising their stay in Pakistan.
