BAHAWALPUR:
The provincial government has been working on assessing the financial requirements of local government institutions, Bahawalpur DCO Ehtisham Anwar Mahaar said on Sunday. He was reading out Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s message regarding local government bodies at a ceremony held in this regard at the Quaid-i-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur.

The DCO was reading the message out to union council chairmen, vice chairmen and councillors of Bahawalpur city and Saddar tehsil. Bahawalpur District Police Officer Sarfraz Ahmad Falki, Bahawalpur City Assistant Commissioner Rao Tasleem Akhter, Bahawalpur Assistant Commissioner Saddar Husnain Khalid Sanpal and Khurshid Ahmad, the acting Local Government and Rural Development director, also attended the ceremony. “A vibrant local government is necessary to promote a democratic culture,” the message says. “The provincial government has mobilised all available resources to strengthen local government institutions.”

The chief minister expressed commitment to make provisions to improve the infrastructure of local government institutions.

“This includes an assessment of financial requirements to provide furniture and office fixtures to ensure smooth functioning of local bodies.” The message says that the government has been sending funds to local government representatives.

The message says that the relevant authorities will announce the elections schedule for the mayor, deputy mayor, chairmen and deputy chairmen seats on local governments after certain legal matters are put to rest.

In his message, the chief minister stressed the need for a vibrant grassroots democracy. “They [local governments] are a vital component of the democratic project. They play a significant role in ensuring a good delivery system to provide socio-economic amenities to the masses.” The message stressed that there was a dire need to rise above petty political and party differences to serve underprivileged classes of the society in a dedicated and committed way.


The DCO and the DPO responded to various questions, regarding local body institutions and law and order, put forward by local government representatives.

The elected representatives also spoke about the significance of local governments and the role they can play to solve issues pertaining to the provision of civic services and in creating a sustainable democratic culture.

Raid at a brick kiln

DCO Ehtisham Anwar Mahaar and DPO Sarfraz Ahmad Falki paid a surprise visit to New Punjab Bricks,  a brick kiln in Chak 6/DNB, Yazman tehsil, Bahawalpur district, on Saturday.

They found underage children working there. The DCO issued orders to seal the brick kiln. The police have registered an FIR against the owner. The DCO also sought an explanation from Yazman Assistant Commissioner Shakil Ahmad in this regard.
