KARAK/MINGORA/PESHAWAR/DIR/DI KHAN:
People in various parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa rushed to automated teller machines (ATM), but returned empty handed as the machines were out of service. This has left them in a difficult situation as Eidul Fitr is around the corner.
Ahmad Zaib, a resident of Swat working in Peshawar, told The Express Tribune he checked four ATMs in Saddar in the city, but all of them were out of service.
He said State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) should take notice of such flaws in services of banks as Eid day is close and people need to use ATM services.
Some of the commuters have faced problems in transaction of money owing to closure of the monitoring unit of SBP’s Peshawar branch.
Not only Peshawar, people in other districts, including Swat, Karak, Tank, DI Khan and Dir were also facing issues in withdrawing money from ATMs.
However, after continuous public complaints, the ATMs in a few areas of some districts, including Swat, Karak and Dir, were fixed. But people of DI Khan and Tank were still faced with the problem as ATMs there had run out of cash.
Not only ATMs, banks were also crowded. People in Peshawar rushed to various bank branches as all will remain closed till Eidul Fitr.
People working outside Peshawar were seen trying to wrap things up on Saturday and withdraw money for Eid shopping to avoid going short on cash at the eleventh hour and to save from the chaos that is likely on Monday that is the only working day before Eidul Fitr.
However, SBP has directed branches of all the banks to remain open on Monday and July 9. Previously, banks had unofficially announced the branches will be closed from July 1 to 10.
