Elderly inmates to get term remission
Women convicts with children will get one-year waiver
ISLAMABAD:
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday advised President Mamnoon Hussein to set free all the elderly prisoners who have served one-third of their sentences so that they may go home for Eid. PM also advised to free all under-18 juvenile convicts who have served one-third of their sentences. The president would grant these remissions in exercise of his powers under Article 45 of the Constitution, providing for special remission in sentence on the occasions of Eidul Fitr, Eid Miladun Nabi, Pakistan Day and Independence Day. President Mamnoon granted 90-day remission to prisoners serving life sentence. All other convicts will get a 45 days waiver of sentence. Women convicts with children will get one-year waiver. The remission, however, would not be admissible for those convicted for murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, rape, robbery, kidnapping and terrorism.
