Interpretation of law: Govt’s reply sought in TV fee case
Counsel for TV’s managing director said the fee was being charged under Wireless Telegraphic Act 1933
LAHORE:
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on Wednesday issued a notice to the attorney general to explain why electricity consumers were being charged for a television (TV) fee. The judge said, “How can a TV fee be levied on television apparatus when other wireless devices have been exempted from such charges?”
Responding to a notice, counsel for TV’s managing director said the fee was being charged under Wireless Telegraphic Act 1933. The CJ issued a notice to the AG, saying that the Constitution must be interpreted according to contemporary needs. “When the fee is not being charged on other electronic gadgets, then why is it being levied on televisions?” The next hearing is on Sept 20.
