LAHORE:
Most of us remember the then-groovy dance sequences from Bollywood movies like Shahrukh Khan’s Josh and Aamir Khan’s highly acclaimed Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. However, like always, it is the stars that gain popularity for these sequences, and not the choreographers that taught them how to shine. Reshma Khan is one such individual — having trained some of the leading names in Bollywood for memorable dance numbers, the gifted choreographer is in Lahore these days, assisting Pakistani actors twirl magic in the upcoming movie, Shor Sharaba.

With experience as extensive, and a portfolio as impressive as hers, one can expect the dance sequences in Shor Sharaba to be absolutely exceptional. Speaking to The Express Tribune, Khan explained why she chose to visit Pakistan and what she feels about the current state of the film industry. “I am visiting Pakistan for the very first time, and I am glad that with my visit, I will be able to contribute to the Pakistani film industry here,” she said. “Since I reached, a number of film-makers have contacted me to choreograph for their upcoming projects and it is an overwhelming feeling indeed.” She added that the Pakistani film industry, in recent years, has successfully made waves across the border and will continue to do so if quality projects are made and promoted. “I feel that Pakistani movies can improve considerably if modern technology is adopted. Another need of the hour is technical expertise. With a bit of effort in both aspects, I don’t see any reason why the Pakistani industry cannot make movies that meet international standards.”

The choreographer explained that she is currently focusing only on Shor Sharaba and has high hopes for the project. “I am giving it my 100% like I always do,” she shared. “Shor Sharaba will indeed be a wonderful movie with memorable songs and dance sequences. It will be an excellent addition to the industry’s top releases.” Helmed by producer Sohail Khan, the film is set to be released on Eidul Azha this year.

Appreciating the efforts of Pakistani film-makers and artists in helping the industry resurface from the abyss it fell into, Khan also emphasised the importance of learning from more established industries. “Pakistani movies being made these days have caught the attention of international audience, and it is now safe to say that the industry is on the right track. However, it is important to keep learning from other, bigger industries to constantly improve and make progress,” said Khan. She added that she was impressed with the efforts that actors Meera and Rabi Peerzada put into their work, and that clearly, there was no shortage of talent in Pakistan.

“The Pakistani industry is teeming with talent in every genre; I would like to mention the singers in particular, who are doing an exceptional job,” said Khan. “Being a choreographer, I have also seen talent in the field of dance but there aren’t many trained dancers here. The country can produce some excellent dance trainers by establishing academies and coaching schools for individuals who are willing to learn.”
